Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery today welcomed a Government decision to slash the maximum stake on fixed odds betting machines from £100 to £2.

George said the decision by the Culture Secretary Matt Hancock would help problem gamblers who become hooked on the machines dubbed ‘the crack cocaine of gambling’.

“Sometimes it is right for government to intervene for the public good and do what is right to protect vulnerable people, so I welcome this announcement,” said George.

“There has been widespread concern and support for a substantial cut in the stakes on these machines from across the political spectrum and in the country.

“I am also pleased the Government is toughening up the rules for online gambling with stronger age verification rules, plus proposals requiring operators to set spending limits until affordability checks have been conducted.”
