MP seeks assurances over septic tank register
Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery is seeking assurances from the Government about plans to register septic tanks because of concerns that some householders could be hit with huge bills.
As part of the European Groundwater Directive, homes in the constituency not connected to main sewers could face paying out thousands if they live in what is called a Source Protection Zone SPZ1.
This means they have a septic tank within 50 metres of a groundwater source and have to automatically apply for a permit costing from £150 to £1500.
In the worse case, it could also mean replacing the tank or even paying for some form of treatment works.
The Government halted the general septic tank registration scheme and its fees in July while it looks at the issue, but guidance from the Environment Agency remains somewhat confusing and it appears that those in a SPZ1 still need to register.
"I welcome that the government has seen this scheme is confusing and problematic and has suspended it while it looks again at the directive, but I'm concerned that it has not fully understood the implications for those living in a SPZ1," explained George.
"Many people in Hampshire live in the zones and potentially it could be a major financial headache for them.
"I have spoken to environment minister Richard Benyon about my concerns and I am awaiting assurances from him that SPZ1 will also be looked at carefully and clarification of the issues and registration will be released as soon as possible."
